An insurance appraisal is a process where a policyholder and an insurance company, in case of a disagreement over the value of a claim due to damage, each select a neutral appraiser to 

independently assess the loss.

The two appraisers will attempt to assess and negotiate an agreed valuation for your claim.  In case of a disagreement as to the amount, a third party (umpire) is chosen to make a binding decision on the claim.
